An advocacy group, under the aegis of Access to Justice, has condemned the recent shooting of EndSars protesters at Lekki Toll Gate, Lagos.

The Group, in a statement titled “Shooting of Unarmed #EndSARS Protesters by Nigerian Soldiers Totally Deplorable” made available to TheNigeriaLawyer signed by its Convener, Joseph Adeola, and its Project Director, Deji Ajare, said the shooting was pre-planned

“The shooting by Nigerian soldiers of unarmed protesters at Lekki, Lagos State on Tuesday 20 October 2020 is an outrageous act of terror against civilians who were peaceably organized and had, for many days been peacefully protesting a longstanding legacy of Nigerian police brutality, abuse and poor governance. From all the reports gathered, the shooting was pre-planned and coordinated and the casualties from it are not confirmed at this time.” they said

Access to Justice expressed disappointment that the same government which promised to reform police and bring an end to police brutality ended up using the military against them (the citizens).

According to the group, the action of the army shows that the government is not sincere in its promises

They said, “It is unfortunate that a government that only a few days ago promised to take far-reaching action to reform the police and bring an end to arbitrary killings and brutality of citizens will mobilize its troops to shoot at unarmed citizens exercising their democratic rights to demand respect or human life and dignity in their country.

“Government’s actions completely belied what it told the protesters a few days earlier, averring that it would take the dignity of citizens far more seriously than it previously did, and prevent any further abuse of their rights. It was on this basis that the government predicated its argument that the protesters should end the protests and give government the space to implement agreed reforms.

“The shooting of Nigeria’s young campaigners on the 20th of October clearly showed that federal government was merely paying lip service to the demands of protesters for reform and had no sincere commitment to anything it had said or promises it had made. Government, it appears, merely wanted to relieve the pressure the protests had placed on social and economic life as well as reclaim the freedom to continue its usual business. Ultimately, this is what the protesters had feared might happen.”

The Group therefore condemned the shootings of the protesters and called on government to investigate the incidence and bring the officers involved to book.

The statement reads, “Access to Justice condemns the attacks on the protesters and calls for a thorough investigation of the incident. It urges the government to ensure that everyone who was connected with the order to shoot protesters as well did the actual shooting, be brought to account immediately. Access to Justice will also be asking the International Criminal Court to investigate these shootings immediately as well as other incidents involving the shooting of unarmed civilian protesters by government law enforcement and security forces across the country.”
