The timing of the corona virus was horrible. Most lawyers just finished paying their wards’ school fees, house rents and other utility bills before it struck. Nobody expected this and as such no enough savings were made for the rainy day.
What you people have done in your various branches is a practical display of taking care of the welfare of Nigerian lawyers. This is what I have been preaching about that we must look inward and see how we can better the welfare of our colleagues. Charity they say, begins at home. NBA is an association whose primary concern ordinarily should be for the welfare of her members. I can’t thank you people enough.
Don’t be afraid to carry out acts of kindness because of what people will say about you. I urge other rich members of the association who have the wherewithal to come out and assist our colleagues who are in dire need at this period. There is nothing one will do that people will not complain about.
In the holy Bible, John Gospel 12:3-6, Mary the sister of Martha took a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the perfume of the ointment. Then said one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who is to betray him, why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but he .. . There are people who will always not be grateful but there are others who will appreciate acts of kindness. Do not be afraid of criticism.
It is in this light that I invite other branches of the NBA and rich members of this noble association to extend their hand of kindness to less privileged lawyers, especially lawyers in the rural areas. Please don’t limit it to young lawyers. There are other senior lawyers who also need help. This is welfare of lawyers in action. Let’s save our colleagues in this trying period.
Once again, do not be afraid to carry out acts of kindness to our colleagues because of what people will say about you.
