The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has urged former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva to make himself available for questioning over an alleged $14,859,257 fraud rather than accuse the commission of political partisanship.

EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale stated this while responding to allegations made by Sylva in his resignation letter from the All Progressives Congress.

Sylva, who announced his resignation from the ruling party on Monday, accused the EFCC of conducting itself more like an organ of the APC than an institution of the state.

He said he deliberately copied the anti-graft commission in his resignation letter because of what he described as its alleged partisan conduct.

“I am deliberately putting the EFCC in a copy of this letter because, of late, it conducted itself more as an organ of the APC than as an institution of the state,” Sylva alleged.

Responding to the allegation, Oyewale said the former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources had already been declared wanted and should present himself before the commission.

“He has been declared wanted; he should make himself available to the commission,” the EFCC spokesperson said.

Sylva had also accused the APC of abandoning the principles upon which it was founded, saying the administration produced by the party had disappointed Nigerians.

“As a founding member of the APC, and one who joined other well-meaning Nigerians in building the party with sweat and money, it is deeply saddening to witness how the ideals we espoused have been so thoroughly and unrecognisably thwarted,” he said.

He added that he could no longer remain in a political party whose leaders allegedly believed that “all is fair in politics.”

“Moreover, I cannot, in all good conscience, continue to belong to a party whose leaders believe that ‘all is fair in politics’ and have consistently demonstrated that belief in practice.

“All cannot be fair in any endeavour of life. The demands of basic decency and morality forbid it. Unfortunately, this mentality appears to underpin virtually every action, and even inaction, of this administration,” Sylva stated.

The EFCC declared Sylva wanted in November 2025 over an alleged conspiracy and dishonest conversion of $14,859,257.

The money was allegedly part of funds provided by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board for the proposed construction of the Atlantic International Refinery and Petrochemical Limited in Bayelsa State.

The commission said it obtained a warrant for Sylva’s arrest from the Federal High Court in Lagos on November 6, 2025.

Sylva had previously criticised the procedure adopted by the EFCC in declaring him wanted. Through his spokesperson, Julius Bokoru, he accused the commission of failing to observe due process and maintained that the former governor had not been properly invited before being declared wanted.

The allegations against Sylva have not resulted in a conviction and remain subject to investigation and judicial determination.
