Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Ikeja has convicted and jailed a 50-year-old real estate agent, Harrison Ekeoma, for the rest of his life for raping a 12-year-old maid.

Justice Oshodi sentenced Ekeoma to life imprisonment after he found him guilty of unlawfully defiling a 12-year-old girl by having unlawful sexual intercourse with her.

The prosecution informed the judge that the offence, committed around January 2023 at Ogba in Ikeja, violated Section 137 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

Four prosecution witnesses testified against the convict while he testified in his own defence.

In her testimony, the survivor’s mother told the court that she came to Lagos from Enugu in 2022 seeking work.

She stated that she found employment in Ojodu Berger but faced housing problems.

The witness further told the court that she entrusted her daughter to the defendant’s wife to help with chores and to send her to school.

However, whenever the defendant’s wife went shopping, he would ask the girl to watch pornography with him and then suggest they do the same.

Police investigations showed that Ekeoma had sex with the girl multiple times at home and threatened her not to tell anyone until 2023, when she used a security man’s phone to call her mother in Ojodu Berger about her ordeal.

In his judgment, Justice Oshodi held, “I am convinced that the defendant had unlawful sexual intercourse with the prosecutrix.”

He added that the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

“The defendant was supposed to be her guardian, but treated her in unimaginable ways. You abused her repeatedly over time. You showed no remorse or apology during the trial,” he stated.

The judge, therefore, sentenced Ekeoma to life imprisonment for raping the minor.

The court also ordered that his name be entered into the Lagos State Sexual Offences Register.
