A disturbing video has exposed unprofessional conduct by an officer of the Nigeria Police Force, who was seen stopping and interrogating two foreign tourists travelling by car through Nigeria, subjecting them to intrusive questioning, inappropriate comments, and what appeared to be subtle intimidation.

The tourists, a young couple from England on a transcontinental road trip from the United Kingdom to South Africa, were stopped by the police officer who immediately began questioning their documentation and purpose of visit.

In the footage, the officer is heard demanding paperwork relating to the vehicle.

“I said, do you have paper for this ride? Where was the paper? Show me. Who approved this?” the officer asked.

The tourists calmly responded that their documents had been processed and approved at the Nigerian border.

“When did you arrive to this country?” the officer pressed.

“Yesterday,” the tourists replied.

The officer appeared unconvinced when told they had driven from England. “You arrived from England to Nigeria yesterday? You drive with this car, right? How many days are you going to stay in Nigeria?”

“We have 30 days,” the tourists responded.

The questioning continued with the officer asking about their next destination.

“From here, which country are you going?” the officer asked.

“Cameroon,” they answered.

“You go by car? I would have arrested you,” the officer said.

“Why?” the tourists asked.

“We don’t practise this way,” the officer replied, referring to the right-hand drive vehicle driven by the tourists.

The visibly confused tourists attempted to explain. “But we’re just here temporarily… We only have 30 days. So the vehicle won’t stay in Nigeria. We will drive to Cameroon.”

The interrogation then shifted to personal matters. The officer asked for their names and inquired whether they were husband and wife.

“No. Boyfriend, girlfriend. We’re not married,” they answered.

“You’re boyfriend and girlfriend? What is the meaning of you coming to Nigeria?” the officer asked.

“Because we want to explore the country and meet people. We want to explore the country and meet people and experience it,” the tourists explained.

The officer then suggested they were being paid for their travels.

“But are you paid in this job? This job you’re doing, are you paid or not?” he asked.

“On what job? We’re not doing a job. No, no, we’re just tourists,” they replied.

In a bizarre remark, the officer allegedly compared them to people who “used to catch animals in the bush,” asking, “Are you not paid for this? What about the fuel you’re going to use? Who will buy for you?”

The tourists firmly denied receiving any sponsorship.

“No, no, we’re not paid. In England, we sold our house. So we had a house in England and we sold it to buy this so we could travel from England all the way to South Africa.”

“You sold your house because of this?” the officer asked in disbelief.

According to the tourists, the encounter lasted several more minutes, during which the officer continued asking intrusive questions about their ages, educational background, previous jobs, marital status, and even whether a light mounted on the side of their vehicle was a surveillance camera.

“This is a camera, right?” the officer asked.

“No, no, it’s a light. It’s a light. A light, a light. Yeah, for at night time when we want to cook outside,” they explained.

The situation escalated further when the officer allegedly began making inappropriate and sexist comments directed at the female tourist.

The tourists recounted that the officer told the male tourist he “needed to make me pregnant,” and later said he wanted to buy alcohol for the woman.

“He wanted to buy Mitchell’s watch, told Mitch he needed to make me pregnant and then told us to pull up and he would buy us alcohol,” the female tourist said in the video narration.

“Do you have alcohol here?” the officer asked at one point.

“We need to get to Benin City before it goes dark,” the tourists responded, attempting to disengage.

“I want to buy alcohol for your girlfriend,” the officer insisted.

As they prepared to leave, the officer made further remarks.

“You like enjoyment too much,” he told them.

He then turned to the female tourist and said, “You like enjoyment. Please, have baby for this man. Have baby for him. This man is a very fine man.”

“When are you going to pregnant her? Try your best to pregnant her. Let her have baby for you. I’ll be very happy to see her pregnant,” he added.

“It’s too hot here for babies,” the male tourist responded awkwardly.

“Baby will come in Jesus’ name,” the officer told the female tourist. “The baby will come, but make sure it’s this one that gives you pregnant.”

The tourists said they had been warned about potential harassment scenarios while travelling in Nigeria and decided to politely decline the officer’s advances.

“This was exactly the type of scenario we had been warned about in Nigeria. So needless to say, we kindly declined. We got our documents back and carried on driving,” they said.

The video has stirred outrage among Nigerians on social media, with many condemning the conduct displayed in the footage as unprofessional, inappropriate, and damaging to the country’s image.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force had not issued an official statement regarding the incident.
