A 22-year-old Nigerian woman, Zainab Abidoye, has gone viral on social media after revealing she rejected a marriage proposal from a man nearly 30 years older than her.

Abidoye, a recent graduate of the University of Ilorin, shared on Twitter that the man, identified only as Alhaji, had been taking care of her financially while they were dating. However, she declined when he began pressuring her for marriage.
The young woman says that although the wealthy man generously provided for her needs, she was not ready for marriage and did not have feelings for him. She also cited their three-decade age gap as a factor.
Abidoye claims Alhaji later married another woman who resembles her and sent Abidoye a video of their wedding, leading her to share the story publicly. She admits she felt “a little pained” but does not regret rejecting him.
Sources close to the former couple allege that Alhaji had funded Abidoye’s extravagant lifestyle and overseas trips while she was in university, expecting marriage in return. However, Abidoye maintains her parents paid for her travels abroad.
The story has sparked debate on social media over transactional relationships and women rejecting marriage solely for financial reasons in Nigeria. Abidoye insists she rejected the union based on lack of compatibility beyond finances.
