Former governor of Rivers State and current minister-designate, Nyesom Wike, paid an unexpected visit on Tuesday to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, in Abuja.

The visit has ignited intense political discussions and speculation about Wike’s political trajectory, especially considering his recent involvement in the ruling party’s affairs.

As the leader of the G-5 Governors, a coalition that notably opposed the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, during the 2023 election, Wike’s visit to the APC national chairman raises eyebrows and prompts questions about his potential switch to the ruling party. Despite consistent denials of any plans to join the APC, Wike’s actions have fueled ongoing speculation about his political allegiance.

Wike’s role in President Bola Tinubu’s presidential campaign in Rivers State, a stronghold of the PDP, has added to the intrigue surrounding his political intentions. During the visit, Wike was received by Ganduje at his residence in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. While the specifics of the meeting remain undisclosed, a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) by the APC indicated that the purpose of Wike’s visit was to extend congratulations to Ganduje on his election to the position of national chairman.

The tweet from the ruling party read: “Former governor of Rivers State and a minister-designate, HE. Nyesom Wike, paid a congratulatory visit to the national chairman, HE. Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje at his residence in Abuja.”

Wike’s recent interactions with APC leaders, his appointment to President Tinubu’s cabinet, and his association with the ruling party have heightened speculations of his potential defection from the PDP. This has prompted mixed reactions within the opposition party, with discussions about possible consequences for Wike’s actions.

Governor Simi Fubara, during a thanksgiving service in Wike’s honor after he left office in Port Harcourt, humorously urged Wike not to distance himself from the PDP if he decided to join the APC.

Wike, who had previously dismissed rumors of switching parties using the metaphor of malaria and cancer, clarified his recent actions during an interview with BBC Pidgin. He likened his engagement with the APC to seeking medical treatment, stating that just as a patient with cancer could potentially recover with better medical care, his interactions with the ruling party were driven by a desire for better outcomes.

He explained, “If someone gets cancer, and he meets a better doctor, won’t he get better treatment? And, if a patient has ordinary malaria without proper care, won’t he die of malaria? Are you not aware that malaria kills people? And what is my concern if someone that has cancer is taken to a good hospital and meets a good doctor and gets healed? That’s just the truth about the two parties.”

As the nation watches these developments unfold, Wike’s visit to the APC national chairman adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing political landscape, leaving Nigerians curious about his future political trajectory and its potential implications.
