*Says APC Supporters Will “Enjoy The Honey”

Borno State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sainna Buba, has sparked controversy after threatening political opponents with physical harm and warning that those who refuse to support the ruling All Progressives Congress could be excluded from government benefits.
Buba made the remarks during the inauguration of a campaign organised by the Tinubu City Boy Movement, a political support group backing President Bola Tinubu’s administration and his anticipated 2027 re-election bid.
Addressing supporters at the event, the commissioner used violent language while warning critics and political opponents against challenging the APC.
“Whoever shows us a finger, we are ready to cut off his fingers,” Buba said.
He continued: “We are now playing politics. Whoever shows us a finger, we will show him a finger… Whoever dares to show us a finger again, we will break his finger.”
Beyond the threat of physical retaliation, the commissioner also suggested that access to government benefits would depend on political loyalty.
“The government is our government. Those who follow us will enjoy the honey; if you refuse, then you will be flogged,” he said.
The remarks have generated concern over political tolerance, public safety and the conduct expected of serving government officials as activities surrounding the 2027 general elections gradually intensify.
Critics have argued that threats of violence and suggestions that state benefits should be reserved for supporters of a ruling party are inconsistent with the principles of multiparty democracy, where citizens are entitled to support political parties and candidates of their choice without intimidation.
Buba had not issued any clarification as of the time of the report on whether the comments were intended literally or were merely aggressive political rhetoric.
The Borno State Government had also not publicly responded to the commissioner’s statements at the time of reporting.
The controversy comes only days after Danjuma Shekwolo, Chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, was reported to have told residents that they should either support the APC or leave the area council.
Shekwolo had declared during a political gathering that it was “either you’re doing APC or leave the area council,” while also saying, “It is either you are with us, or you are not here.”
