The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has identified and detained officers accused of allegedly extorting ₦40,000 from a resident along the Wuye–Utako Road, near Salem Church, Abuja.

The Command said the officers seen in a video circulating on social media had been identified and were currently in custody as investigations into the allegation continued.
FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, saying the attention of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, had been drawn to the viral footage.
According to the Command, the video alleged that officers attached to the FCT Police Command collected ₦40,000 from a resident along the Wuye–Utako axis.
“The officers depicted in the video have been identified and are in custody,” the statement said.
The video, which began circulating widely on social media around August 24, reportedly showed a man alleging that the incident occurred on August 20, 2026.
The complainant claimed that a police officer collected ₦40,000 from him despite confirming that his vehicle documents were complete.
He also shared footage said to show a receipt and part of a conversation after he returned to the checkpoint.
The FCT Police Command said the complainant had been invited to its headquarters to make an official statement and provide information that could assist the investigation and any possible disciplinary proceedings.

Commissioner of Police Sanusi reiterated that the Command would not tolerate extortion, abuse of authority, misconduct or other forms of unprofessional behaviour by police personnel.
“Any officer found culpable after due investigation will be subjected to appropriate disciplinary and legal action in accordance with extant laws and regulations,” the statement quoted him as saying.
The Command also urged members of the public to continue reporting incidents of alleged police misconduct and to provide relevant evidence capable of assisting investigations.
The latest allegation comes amid recurring complaints about extortion and unauthorised checkpoints in parts of the Federal Capital Territory.
In June 2026, Sanusi warned police personnel against extorting commercial tricycle and motorcycle operators, declaring that any officer found engaging in such conduct would be treated as a thief rather than a police officer.
The Command also took disciplinary action against four officers in July 2026 after they were accused of abandoning their authorised duty posts, setting up an unauthorised checkpoint and allegedly extorting about ₦52,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, Musa Aliyu, SAN.
The officers were detained and ordered to face an orderly room trial over the allegations.
