The Rivers State Police Command has relieved the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Abuloma Division and the officer overseeing the Abuloma Police Outpost of their duties following allegations that suspected cultists financed the renovation of the police facility and later visited it to celebrate the completion of the project.

The Command said the action followed a trending social media report and circulating video alleging that suspected cult members renovated the Abuloma Police Outpost and visited the facility on Thursday, October 15, 2026.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga A. Adepoju, the Command condemned any conduct capable of compromising the integrity and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force or giving suspected criminal groups legitimacy or public recognition.

The Police stressed that its facilities are public institutions established for the protection of citizens and enforcement of the law and should not become avenues through which suspected criminal groups seek influence or validation.

“The Command strongly condemns any action or association capable of compromising the integrity, discipline and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force or conferring legitimacy, recognition or acceptance on suspected cult groups or other unlawful organisations,” the statement said.

“Police facilities are public institutions established for the protection of citizens and the enforcement of law and must not become platforms through which criminal groups seek public validation or influence.”

Consequently, the Command said both the DPO in charge of Abuloma Division and the Divisional Officer overseeing the affected outpost had been queried and relieved of their duties pending the outcome of an investigation.

Commissioner of Police Adepoju also ordered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the renovation and the identities of those involved.

According to the Command, investigators are expected to determine the identities and backgrounds of the persons or groups who financed or facilitated the project, the officers who authorised or approved it and whether the required procedures were followed.

The investigation will also examine whether any police officer breached professional standards, compromised the integrity of the Force or had any improper involvement in the project.

While acknowledging that members of the public and communities may legitimately support the improvement of police facilities, the Command said such assistance must be properly regulated and must not compromise police independence or security.

It referred to Section 26(1)(d) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020, which provides for gifts and contributions to the Police General Fund, but maintained that such support must comply with applicable procedures.

The Command said the investigation would determine whether necessary approvals were obtained before the renovation and whether appropriate background checks were carried out on those who financed or facilitated the project.

It further warned that the provision of financial or material assistance to the Police does not place any individual or organisation beyond investigation or prosecution.

“No donation or assistance confers immunity from investigation or prosecution,” the Command said.

The Police reiterated that it would not tolerate unprofessional conduct, compromise or improper association between its personnel and suspected criminal elements.

It added that all officers were expected to maintain the highest standards of discipline, integrity and accountability in the performance of their duties.

The Command said disciplinary and legal action would be taken against anyone found culpable after the investigation, in accordance with applicable laws and police regulations.

It also reiterated its commitment to professionalism, transparency, protection of lives and property and the fight against cultism and organised crime in Rivers State.

Members of the public were urged to remain calm and continue providing credible information to the Police as the investigation proceeds.
