The Presidency has refuted claims that the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Wale Edun, proposed a new minimum wage of N105,000 ($71) per month for Nigerian workers.

Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, took to his X account on Thursday to clarify the situation. He stated, “The Honourable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Wale Edun, has not proposed N105,000 minimum wage. The contrary story being disseminated is false.”

This statement comes after reports circulated earlier in the day, suggesting that Edun had presented a new minimum wage template to President Bola Tinubu within the 48-hour deadline. Edun, alongside the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu, had reportedly submitted the projected cost implications of implementing a new national minimum wage to the President at the presidential villa in Abuja.

The alleged proposal, as reported by Western Post, indicated a minimum wage of N105,000 per month for Nigerian workers. However, the Presidency has now firmly denied the existence of such a proposal.

The recent developments follow a nationwide strike by labour unions, which commenced on Monday after a meeting with the National Assembly leadership failed to yield satisfactory results. The strike led to significant disruptions in economic activities across the country, with the closure of international airports, schools, courts, banks, and hospitals.

On Tuesday, members of the organised labour, including the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, suspended their strike for five days.
