The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results of the May/June 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) taken by over 1.6 million candidates nationwide.
However, the results of candidates from eight states will not be released due to the failure of their respective states to pay the registration fees.
Mr. Patrick Areghan, the Nigeria Head of National Office (HNO), announced the results at the Yaba head office of the council. He stated that 20,851 secondary schools presented candidates who wrote 76 subjects, totaling 197 papers. The marking of answer scripts concluded on August 1, 2023, at 85 marking venues and one e-marking center.
A total of 1,621,884 candidates registered for the examination from 20,867 recognized secondary schools in the country, and out of these, 1,613,733 candidates sat for the examination.
The school exam was also conducted for candidates from some schools in Benin Republic, Cote d’Ivoire, and Equatorial Guinea, where the Nigerian curriculum for Senior Secondary Schools is used.
Additionally, 70,794 candidates with varying degrees of special needs registered for the examination, including visually impaired, hearing-impaired, spastic cum mentally challenged, and physically challenged candidates. All these candidates were properly accommodated during the examination, and their results are being released alongside those of other candidates.
Out of the total number of candidates, 1,476,565 candidates, representing 91.5%, have their results fully processed and released. However, 137,168 candidates, representing 8.5%, still have some of their subjects being processed due to various shortcomings, non-compliance with regulations, and issues associated with the schools and candidates involved. Efforts are being made to resolve these matters to ensure all affected candidates receive their fully processed results in the next few days.
The statistics of candidate performance show that 1,361,608 candidates, representing 84.38%, obtained credit and above in a minimum of any five subjects, with or without English Language and/or Mathematics.
Furthermore, 1,287,920 candidates, representing 79.81%, obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. Out of this number, 616,914 were male candidates, representing 47.9%, while 671,006 were female candidates, representing 52.1%.
However, the results of 262,803 candidates, representing 16.29% of the total number of candidates, are being withheld due to various reported cases of examination malpractice. This figure is 6.54% lower than the previous year, indicating a decline in examination malpractice.
Mr. Areghan also warned against the use of ‘Expo’ (cheating aids) and examination malpractice, emphasizing that the council will continue to sanction those involved, including schools, supervisors, teachers, and candidates perpetrating such acts.
Regarding indebtedness to WAEC, the HNO revealed that eight states owe the council registration fees, and as a consequence, the results of candidates sponsored by these states will not be released. The states include Niger and Zamfara, with Zamfara owing over N1 billion despite not sponsoring candidates in this particular exam.
However, private schools in these states that registered candidates will receive their results as they have fulfilled their financial obligations to WAEC.
