Retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Hon. Justice Mary Ukaego Peter-Odili, has urged law students to value the practical experience gained through moot and mock trial competitions, noting that the lessons acquired could become invaluable as they advance in the legal profession.

Justice Odili gave the advice while addressing participants at the 2026 Niger Delta Development Commission Annual Moot and Mock Trial Competition in Port Harcourt.
The competition brought together students from 16 university law faculties across the Niger Delta to test their advocacy, legal research and courtroom presentation skills through simulated proceedings.
The retired Supreme Court Justice encouraged the participants to take the exercise seriously and retain the lessons learned, stressing that such practical exposure would prove useful in their future professional careers.
Chairman of the Seventh Governing Board of the NDDC, Chiedu Ebie, who declared the competition open, said the commission remained committed to the programme because of its importance in preparing aspiring lawyers for professional practice.
Ebie said moot court competitions provide students with an opportunity to move beyond theoretical classroom instruction by sharpening their advocacy and courtroom presentation skills.
He added that the experience would help participants develop the confidence needed to use the legal profession to draw attention to challenges confronting the Niger Delta.
The NDDC Managing Director, Samuel Ogbuku, represented by the Executive Director, Finance and Administration, Alabo Boma Iyaye, said previous editions of the competition had contributed significantly to the education and development of law students.
According to him, the programme equips participants with legal knowledge, advocacy skills and practical experience capable of shaping their professional careers.
