Professor Egbewole gave this advice while addressing participants at the orientation program organized by the Kwara State chapter of the United States Government Exchange Alumni Association, held at the university’s main auditorium.
The Vice-Chancellor, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Olubunmi Abayomi Omotesho, highlighted the various routes available for traveling abroad and encouraged the participants to make informed decisions about their journeys. He cautioned potential emigrants against being tempted by promises of quick wealth in Europe and America, reminding them that the currency used in those countries is not Naira. He congratulated the participants for being part of the eye-opening event.
Speaking at the program, Dr. Raymond Ogunade, the Director of the Centre for Cultural Studies and Creative Arts, emphasized the importance of hard work. He noted that all the people who had been on various US government programs are hardworking individuals. Dr. Ogunade advised against procrastination and urged the participants to consider the interests of their sponsors while writing their proposals.
Dr. Adeniyi Saheed Aremu, Managing Director of the Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority, Ilorin, and an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, University of Ilorin, likened the Fulbright experience to an international youth service corps. He encouraged applicants to view their proposals as marketing tools to present themselves effectively. Dr. Aremu, who participated in the Fulbright program in 2009, highlighted that these government-assisted programs open doors for more opportunities, as Americans tend to maintain connections.
In his address, Dr. Abdulkareem Oloyede, Acting Director of the Centre for Research Development and In-House Training (CREDIT), University of Ilorin, represented by Dr. O. Atolani of the Department of Chemistry, advised participants to seek information as it empowers them. Dr. Oloyede emphasized the advantages of foreign programs and urged participants to bring back the knowledge gained to contribute to the development of Nigeria.”
