The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor Florence Obi, has delivered the findings of a committee’s investigation into allegations of sexual harassment involving Professor Cyril Ndifo, a former Dean of the Faculty of Law at the university.

The report was submitted to the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, on Thursday.

Professor Obi stated that the university adhered to proper procedures in addressing the matter, which included suspending Professor Ndifo and initiating disciplinary actions. To ensure transparency, a diverse group of observers was invited, representing organizations such as the Public Complaint Commission, Nigerian Bar Association, Federation of Female Lawyers, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Chief Judge of the Student’s Union High Court, and seven civil society organizations.

In response to the report, Minister Mamman pledged to take decisive action against perpetrators of sexual harassment in Nigerian universities. He announced plans to establish sexual offences units in the Ministry and higher education institutions to tackle the issue effectively. He emphasized that sexual harassment is a grave criminal offense that must be addressed promptly and sternly, promising the government’s commitment to curbing such incidents in higher learning institutions.

Minister Mamman underscored that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is dedicated to safeguarding vulnerable groups within the country’s educational system.

The allegations of sexual harassment at the University of Calabar emerged when female students from the law faculty held a peaceful protest against Professor Ndifo, accusing him of misconduct. Professor Ndifo denied the allegations and suggested that the protest was orchestrated by faculty members who disagreed with his leadership. He had faced similar accusations in 2015, leading to his suspension, following an accusation of rape made by a 200-level student in the faculty.
