A leadership crisis may be brewing at the National Space Research and Development Agency (NARSDA) following the retirement of Acting Director-General, Mr Jonathan Angulu, on May 15.
It is over the alleged refusal to elevate the most senior official in the agency to the Acting DG role.
Angulu was appointed in acting capacity last June after Prof Seidu Mohammed’s two terms expired.
It was expected that Dr Ganiyu Agbaje, would be named the Acting Director-General, but someone his junior was said to have been appointed in an acting capacity instead.
Agbaje is currently the Executive Director of the United Nations-affiliated African Regional Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in English (ARCSSTE-E) at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.
An indigene of Lagos State who became a deputy director in 2006, he is the most senior official at NARSDA, sources at the agency said.
He was seconded to the Federal Civil Service from the Lagos State Civil Service Commission in September 2004.
Staff members hope the government would ensure the situation with the agency’s headship does not dampen staff morale.
They expect the supervising minister to correct matters.
