Governor Umahi also express his resolve and commitment to reduce the staff strength of the university, to meet up with the economic reality of the State. He said that a committee would be set up to interface with government on how to downsize the staff of the universities, which he said was the highest workforce in all the universities in the South East region. The reduction according to Leadership Weekend investigation was the first after the former Governor, Chief Martin Elechi increased the fees in 2008, which generated ripples and violent protest among the students in the state. Umahi made the pronouncement during his first visit to the permanent site of the state university in Ezzamgbo. He noted the fees would take effect from 2017 but would be reversed any time there is act of cultism and violent protest in the university.
