The United Kingdom has announced that starting November 15th, 2023, Nigerian citizens and other foreign nationals seeking to enter the UK will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) prior to travel.

The ETA requirement applies to all non-British and Irish citizens without current UK residence, including children. Individuals previously able to visit the UK visa-free must now apply for the electronic permit before arrival.

According to the UK Home Office, the ETA covers visits up to 6 months for purposes like tourism, business, family, and short-term study. Applicants must submit applications online before booking trips to the UK.

Once granted, the ETA allows multiple entries over a 2-year validity period or until the applicant’s passport expires. Travellers with valid UK visas may be barred from boarding without an accompanying valid ETA.

The digital permit provides pre-approval for travel but does not guarantee UK entry. Applicants would still undergo passport control checks at borders. They should present the same passport used for ETA application.

The UK stated the ETA improves security assurances on who enters the country. Critics argue the additional requirement creates barriers and hinders travel.

Nigerians planning UK trips after November 15th must budget time and cost to apply for the ETA to avoid being denied boarding or turned away at borders. Airlines are also expected to enforce the new entry mandate for the UK.

The UK joins countries like the US, Canada and Australia in implementing electronic travel authorization systems. Nigerians will hope for a smooth application process as the UK digitizes its entry procedures.
