The United States has delivered military equipment to the Nigerian Air Force as part of ongoing defence cooperation aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to combat terrorism and other security threats.

The United States Africa Command, AFRICOM, disclosed the development on Thursday, saying a U.S. Air Force C-17 transport aircraft delivered the equipment to Nigeria over the weekend.

According to AFRICOM, the shipment was supplied under a Foreign Military Sales arrangement between the governments of the United States and Nigeria.

The command said the delivery formed part of broader efforts to deepen security cooperation between Washington and Abuja and improve Nigeria’s operational capability against terrorist organisations and other armed groups.

“The equipment is part of a foreign military sales agreement that furthers the US-Nigerian partnership and will aid in Nigeria’s efforts to counter terrorism in the region,” AFRICOM stated.

The specific items contained in the shipment were not disclosed in the report.

The latest delivery comes as Nigerian security forces continue military operations against terrorist groups and other armed elements operating across different parts of the country.

Nigeria has for years battled Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province in the North-East, while the military has also been deployed against banditry, kidnapping and other security threats in several regions.

The United States has supported Nigeria’s security efforts through military training, defence cooperation and the supply of equipment intended to enhance the country’s ability to respond to terrorism and other security challenges.
