Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State said he has not seen the contents of the recently signed Electoral Act by President Bola Tinubu, noting that conflicting versions of the document are currently in circulation.

Makinde said that despite being a serving governor, he has not had access to the actual document signed by the President, raising concerns about the authenticity of the versions being circulated publicly.

The governor spoke while hosting Muslim faithful and other prominent personalities to an iftar fast-breaking at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Agodi, Ibadan.

Describing the Electoral Act as a key reference framework for the 2027 general elections, Makinde said those responsible should make the authentic version of the law available to Nigerians.

He urged the authorities to make the original document signed by the President public so that citizens can clearly understand its provisions.

“I have been reading on social media that the governor has not released some people who want to take up the job from me. I have released you all. Anyone who wants to contest, please bring out your billboards,” he said.

The governor also called on aspirants interested in contesting the 2027 governorship election in the state to openly declare their intentions.

Makinde further advised members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who may be uncertain about the future of the party to continue identifying with it publicly.

“And those of you who are concerned about PDP, put the PDP logo on your billboard; nothing will happen,” he added.

While commenting on the recently released election timetable, the governor hinted that he still had observations about the schedule but declined to provide details.

“To be honest, as the governor of Oyo State, I’m one out of 36 in Nigeria, and I am not sure what they brought out as the Electoral Act. I haven’t seen it, I have not laid my hands on it. And if I, as a governor, haven’t seen the Electoral Act, they said there are two versions out there, I don’t know. Maybe I don’t want to say it all out.

“If it is true, I think the people in charge must let the entire Nigeria know, because that is like the reference book for the election in 2027. They should let us know and come clean. Bring out the Electoral Act, the one assented to by the President, so that we can all work according to that Act.

Speaking on a cautionary note, Governor Makinde alleges that the same situation surrounds the recently signed Tax Law, which he noted also has two versions in circulation.

He urged those seeking to take over from him not to show loyalty to him as a person, but to show loyalty to the people of Oyo State.

“I didn’t want to spill it out. There are also two documents for the Tax Law. I haven’t seen the official one, so help us appeal to those in charge; they should let us know which rule book we are playing with.

“But, having said that, those interested in becoming the governor of Oyo State by May 28th, 2027, should come out, show themselves, and sell themselves to the people of Oyo State.

“Don’t be loyal to Seyi Makinde, be loyal to the people of Oyo State, be loyal to the development of Oyo State, and you will have my support.”
