*Orders Review Of Green Card Holders From 19 Countries

President Donald Trump has announced that he will “permanently pause” immigration from all Third World countries and move to remove anyone in the United States who is “not a net asset,” following a deadly shooting near the White House involving an Afghan national.

Trump made the announcement late Thursday in a message posted on his Truth Social account. He said the move would allow the U.S. immigration system to “fully recover” and reverse what he described as “millions” of unlawful admissions under the Biden administration.

“I will permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries to allow the U.S. system to fully recover, terminate all of the millions of Biden illegal admissions, including those signed by Sleepy Joe Biden’s Autopen, and remove anyone who is not a net asset to the United States, or is incapable of loving our Country,” Trump wrote.

The announcement came hours after a National Guard member, Sarah Beckstrom of West Virginia, died from injuries sustained in a shooting attack in Washington D.C. Beckstrom and another guardsman, Andrew Wolfe, were shot Wednesday in an incident authorities say involved 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national.

During a Thanksgiving call with service members, Trump confirmed Beckstrom’s death. He described her as “highly respected” and “magnificent in every way,” noting she began her service in June 2023. He said Wolfe remains hospitalized and “fighting for his life.”

Beckstrom’s father, Gary Beckstrom, had earlier told The New York Times that his daughter had suffered a “mortal wound.”

Officials said Lakanwal entered the United States in September 2021 under a resettlement program and was living in Bellingham, Washington, with his wife and five children. A senior administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Lakanwal applied for asylum in December 2024 and received approval on April 23, 2025. He reportedly had no known criminal history.

The shooting has prompted a sweeping policy response from the Trump administration. Joseph Edlow, Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, said Trump has ordered a “full scale, rigorous re-examination” of every green card issued to citizens of nineteen “ countries of concern,” as well as a review of asylum cases approved under the Biden administration.

Asked for additional details, including which countries are considered to be “of concern,” USCIS pointed CNN to 19 countries listed in a June presidential proclamation.

The 19 countries include Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela.

At a separate press interaction, Trump clashed with a reporter who questioned why he blamed the Biden administration for the shooting. When the reporter noted that Afghan refugees had undergone vetting, Trump rejected the claim, saying, “There was no vetting or anything. They came in unvetted.” He then criticized the reporter, saying, “Are you a stupid person? They came in on a plane along with thousands of other people that shouldn’t be here.”

Following the shooting, federal officials intensified scrutiny of resettlement and asylum programs. Trump said his administration intends to terminate all immigration actions he described as improperly authorized and will move forward with the new immigration restrictions.
