At the 67th Annual General Conference (AGC) of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Enugu yesterday, Treasurer Blessing Udofa-Poromon presented the 2024-2025 Financial Report, highlighting Bar Practising Fee (BPF) collections and the ongoing 10% remittance to branches. While the report underscores transparency and member benefits, legal analysts and political observers note its strategic significance for aspirants in upcoming NBA leadership elections.
The data, reflecting contributions across 130 branches, provides a clear map of branch strength and potential voter influence. NBA elections including the presidency and other national officer positions are conducted via universal electronic voting (e-voting). According to the NBA Constitution, only members who have paid their annual BPF and branch dues by March 31 of the election year are eligible to vote, making high-contributing branches critical battlegrounds.
“The report isn’t just financial it’s a voter map,” said TheNigeriaLawyer editor in chief Chioma Kate Unini Esq. “Branches like Lagos and Abuja hold outsized influence because they house thousands of eligible voters who can tip the scales in any contest for the presidency or national offices.”
- Lagos Branch: Led the nation with ₦232.8 million in BPF for January March 2025, remitting ₦23.28 million. As the commercial hub of Nigeria, Lagos attracts corporate lawyers and hosts major law firms, giving it significant sway in elections. The branch’s large, diverse membership including Senior Advocates makes it a key target for campaign engagement.
- Abuja Branch: Second-highest with ₦198.1 million in BPF and ₦19.8 million remitted. Housing lawyers linked to government, policy, and constitutional law, Abuja offers strategic influence through endorsements from high-profile members and policy stakeholders.
- Other High-Impact Branches: Port Harcourt (₦71.2 million), Benin (₦36.7 million), and Ibadan (₦34.8 million) round out the top five, representing important regional centers and potential voter strongholds in the South-South, South-South, and South-West zones.
These top branches alone account for over 50% of total BPF collections, highlighting the numerical advantage they offer candidates in nationwide contests.
The Treasurer’s Report offers actionable insights for candidates eyeing the 2026 NBA elections:
- Targeting High-Impact Branches: Prioritize resources on branches contributing the largest share of BPF to maximize voter outreach and engagement.
- Tailored Messaging: Urban branches with more Senior Advocates may respond to professional development-focused campaigns, including NHIS coverage, Leadway death benefit, discounted CPD courses, and mentorship opportunities.
- Building Alliances: Branch chairmen and secretaries play key roles in mobilization; securing endorsements can amplify campaign reach.
- Promoting Equity: Smaller branches, like Saki (₦495,000 BPF), may benefit from proposed increases in remittances from 10% to 20% with half earmarked for branch Human Rights Committees, offering candidates a platform to champion inclusivity.
“The report is a critical tool, but engagement remains key,” Unini added. “Candidates must address welfare schemes, advocacy for the rule of law, and member development to resonate across all branches.”
