In a heartfelt message addressed to his supporters, Tobenna, a candidate in the recently concluded Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) presidential election, expressed gratitude for the love and support shown to him throughout his campaign.
He also shared his concerns about the electoral process and his ongoing efforts to ensure transparency and fairness.
Tobenna revealed that he had encountered a life-threatening attack by kidnappers during the campaign, which led to the loss of a policeman in his entourage and other lives. Despite this harrowing experience, he remained resolute in his commitment to building a “courageous and resilient Bar where no lawyer is left behind.”
Following the election, Tobenna received a call from the winner-designate, who asked that they put the elections behind them and work together in the interest of the Bar. However, Tobenna expressed his inability to extend congratulations due to concerns about the electoral process. He informed the winner-designate of his intention to call for an independent audit.
Emphasizing the importance of trust in the system, Tobenna stated, “Beyond the issues around technology and the possibility of manipulation, was the critical issue of Trust in the system.” He called on everyone to stay the course and work towards fixing the legal profession, regardless of the challenges faced.
Tobenna and his team have written to the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA) requesting documents and access for an audit of the electoral process. Despite their request being in accordance with the NBA Constitution, they have been denied access on the grounds of data protection laws. The ECNBA has responded to their observations but has not provided the necessary documents for an audit.
The candidate’s team has also reached out to ElectionBuddy, the platform used for the elections, seeking information that would ordinarily be available to voters and candidates. However, ElectionBuddy has directed them to refer all inquiries to the ECNBA.
Tobenna stressed the simplicity of his request, stating, “Allow an independent audit of the electioneering process and the data that was submitted to ElectionBuddy for the elections. I don’t think that this amounts to asking for too much. It is our right to request for an audit so why are they afraid of allowing a process that will clear all doubts and give closure on this issue.”
As he continues his fight for truth, equity, equality, justice, and fairness in the legal profession, Tobenna assured his supporters that he will persist in creating opportunities for growth, progress, and prosperity for legal practitioners in Nigeria, even if it means doing so in his private capacity.
