…Generals Get 30%, Lower Ranks 80%

President Bola Tinubu has approved salary increases ranging from 30 to 80 per cent for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces as part of measures to improve troop welfare and strengthen the country’s security institutions.
The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced the approval in a statement on Tuesday, saying approximately 250,000 military personnel would benefit from the revised pay structure.
According to the Presidency, the new salary arrangement will take effect from September 1, 2026, with the percentage increase determined by the ranks of the beneficiaries.
Under the approved structure, officers above the rank of colonel, including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant-Generals and Generals, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
Personnel from the rank of colonel down to warrant officer will receive a 50 per cent increase, while those between private and staff sergeant will benefit from an 80 per cent salary increase.
The Presidency said the revised package would raise the Federal Government’s annual wage bill for Armed Forces personnel from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, representing an additional yearly expenditure of ₦264 billion.
Onanuga said the approval reflected Tinubu’s recognition of the courage, sacrifices and difficult conditions under which members of the Armed Forces confront terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.
The President maintained that military personnel responsible for protecting citizens and defending the territorial integrity of Nigeria deserved adequate support and appreciation.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” Tinubu was quoted as saying.
He assured the Armed Forces that his administration would continue to prioritise troop welfare alongside the modernisation of the military.
According to him, the government will provide the weapons, equipment and technological resources required by personnel to discharge their responsibilities effectively.
“Our administration will continue to prioritise troop welfare and modernise the Armed Forces by providing the weapons and technological tools needed to discharge their duties,” the President said.
Tinubu stressed that national development and economic progress could not be achieved without an effective security system capable of protecting lives, property and critical national infrastructure.
“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians,” he added.
The President urged military personnel to regard the salary review as an expression of the government’s appreciation for their service and sacrifices to the country.
He also called on them to remain professional and committed as the government intensifies operations against groups threatening Nigeria’s peace and stability.
“I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together, we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” Tinubu said.
The latest salary review forms part of broader measures announced by the administration to improve military welfare, expand the Armed Forces and strengthen operational readiness amid persistent security challenges in several parts of the country.
