Former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Lagos Branch and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, FCIArb (UK), has called for a return to the nation’s foundational constitutional principles, urging Egbe Amofin O’Odua to champion true federalism as a path to justice, security, and sustainable development.

In a goodwill message to the Yoruba lawyers’ group on the occasion of its 2025 Annual National Conference themed “Regional Justice, Security and Sustainable Development,” Akangbe praised the theme as both timely and reflective of Nigeria’s founding vision.

“This timely theme echoes the visionary structure upon which our founding fathers anchored the 1960 Independence and 1963 Republican Constitutions — true federalism which allowed each region to flourish according to its pace, values, and resources,” he said.

The senior lawyer posed a thought-provoking question to members of the Egbe: “Is it not time to revisit the foundational constitutional arrangements that worked — when regions thrived, security was localised, and governance was responsive?”

Akangbe commended Aare Abiola Isiaka Olagunju, SAN, Chairman of Egbe Amofin, and Mr. Olusegun Fabunmi, SAN, Chairman of the Planning Committee, for their leadership and commitment to the ideals of the Egbe.

Describing Egbe Amofin as “the conscience of the Bar in the South West and beyond,” he expressed hope that the conference deliberations would reignite national dialogue on equity, justice, and good governance.

“May your deliberations reignite the passion for equitable justice and sustainable progress in our land,” he concluded.
