The Federal Ministry of Education has issued comprehensive guidance to address widespread enquiries from students, parents, school proprietors, and administrators regarding subject selection under the revised Senior Secondary School Curriculum.

In a statement on Saturday in Abuja, the Ministryâs Director of Press and Public Relations, Mrs. Folasade Boriowo, explained that the clarification followed numerous calls, letters, and public concerns arising from misinterpretations circulating across various platforms.
She quoted the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, as affirming that there are no restrictions or exclusions on the selection of any approved subject within the Senior Secondary School Curriculum. All subjects remain fully open for students to choose, provided such choices are guided by school authorities, parents, or certified school counsellors.
Dr. Alausa noted that students in the sciences may select subjects traditionally classified under the arts or social sciences, while arts and social sciences students can choose subjects under the sciences. The curriculum, he said, is flexible, student-centred, and designed to support diverse academic interests and career pathways.
The Minister also clarified that the subject formerly known as Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has been renamed Digital Technology. He stressed that the change is purely in nomenclature and does not alter the curriculum content. Students who previously offered ICT are therefore fully eligible to register for Digital Technology in examinations.
On trade subjects, Dr. Alausa explained that six trade subjects have been approved under the curriculum. Students may register for any of these if offered by their school and taught accordingly. However, students not exposed to any trade subjects are not obliged to register for them as a third subject.
