Tunisia have sacked Sabri Lamouchi as head coach of the national team following their heavy defeat to Sweden in their opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The French-Tunisian coach was dismissed after the Carthage Eagles suffered a 5-1 loss to Sweden in Monterrey in the early hours of Monday.

The defeat left Tunisia supporters furious, with the team widely criticised for a poor performance in their first game of the tournament.

Lamouchi’s exit comes just five months after he was appointed as Tunisia’s national team coach.

Reports said the Tunisian football authorities moved quickly to terminate his appointment after the team was outclassed by the Scandinavian side, who dominated the game and began their World Cup campaign with a convincing victory.

Journalist Romain Molina reported: “It’s the end for Sabri Lamouchi at the helm of the Tunisian national team.”

Lamouchi now becomes the third coach in World Cup history to be sacked during the tournament.

His dismissal has generated mixed reactions among fans, with some describing the decision as too drastic during a major competition, while others questioned his tactical capacity and suitability for the job.

One fan reacted online, saying: “The worst possible idea during the World Cup. We already knew that Lamouchi wasn’t a great tactician and that Tunisia had the level of a U23 national team. The real problem is much deeper than that.”

Another wrote: “Seriously, I wonder if he’s ever even had any success as a coach himself!”

The decision leaves Tunisia facing further uncertainty as they continue their World Cup campaign following a damaging start to the tournament.
