A heart-wrenching incident has left a family devastated after a building contractor, Onyedikachi Eze, lost his wife, Favour Paul, and their newborn baby during a Cesarean section at Lebechi Hospital in Owerri, according to PUNCh report.

Eze alleges that the medical staff, including nurses who were reportedly watching YouTube videos to guide them through the procedure, mishandled the delivery, leading to the tragic deaths.

Onyedikachi Eze, a distraught husband and father, recounted the harrowing experience in an interview. His wife, Favour Paul, had been registered for antenatal care at Lebechi Hospital since June 2024 due to its proximity to their home. On January 21, 2025, Favour walked to the hospital after complaining of abdominal pain. Eze, who was at work in Enugu State, rushed to the hospital after being informed of his wife’s critical condition.

Upon arrival, Dr. Lebechi Chijioke, the hospital’s owner, informed Eze that his wife needed an emergency C-section due to complications with the placenta. However, Eze claims that the medical team was ill-prepared for the procedure. Shockingly, he alleges that nurses were watching YouTube videos to learn how to perform the surgery while his wife was bleeding profusely.

Eze described a chaotic scene in the hospital, which he said was ill-equipped to handle emergencies. The power went out during the operation, forcing Eze to fix and fuel the hospital’s generator himself. He also had to purchase blood from another hospital after being told his wife needed a transfusion. Despite his efforts, Favour and the baby did not survive.

Dr. Lebechi later admitted that surgery was not her area of expertise, raising questions about her qualifications to oversee such a procedure. Eze was billed N480,000 for the operation, which was later negotiated down to N350,000 after he helped with the generator.

The tragic incident has sparked outrage, with Eze’s brother-in-law reaching out to a human rights group to seek justice. Dr. Lebechi is currently in police custody, but Eze fears that her influence may hinder the case. He expressed frustration that the hospital’s alleged inadequacies were only brought to his attention after the tragedy.

Eze’s story has shed light on the dangers of inadequate medical facilities and unqualified personnel. He revealed that Lebechi Hospital, located in a three-bedroom flat, had only four nurses, all of whom were reportedly student nurses from Holy Rosary Hospital. There were no cleaners or receptionists, and the hospital lacked sufficient lower-level staff.

Eze’s young son, who has been staying with his sister, has been unwell since the incident, crying frequently and suffering from a cold. The family is struggling to cope with the loss, while Eze remains determined to seek justice for his wife and baby.
