The Nigerian Law Society has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police against Dr. Tonye Clinton Jaja, Ambassador Dahiru Aliyu and their associates over allegations of impersonation, fraud, forgery and unauthorised use of the name and institutional identity of the professional body.

In a public notice issued by its National Secretariat, the NLS said the petition was submitted to the Inspector-General of Police on Monday, September 14, 2026, and asked the police to investigate activities it alleged were being carried out in the name of the society without the authority of its recognised leadership.
The allegations have not been independently established, and no finding of wrongdoing against Jaja, Aliyu or any other person named in the petition was disclosed in the notice.
According to the NLS, Jaja was engaged as Executive Director of the society on July 12, 2024, and remained in that position until July 21, 2025, when he resigned.
The society said his appointment was not renewed and alleged that he subsequently began laying claim to ownership or control of the Nigerian Law Society.
The NLS said its petition raised concerns over what it described as the purported registration of a parallel organisation bearing the name “Nigerian Law Society” with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria.
It also referenced a planned conference at Top Rank Hotel, Utako, Abuja; a programme described as the “Blue Silk” award; and a 12-week legislative drafting course which, according to the society, was represented as being organised in partnership with the University of Abuja without its authorisation.
The NLS further said the petition referred to an online report published by Daily Post on August 16, 2026 and attributed to Jaja.
It consequently warned members of the public to exercise caution in dealing with any individual or organisation soliciting money, applications, participation or patronage in the name of the Nigerian Law Society without authorisation from what it described as its legitimate National Secretariat.
“The general public is hereby warned to be wary of any person or group parading itself as the Nigerian Law Society, or soliciting money, applications, participation or patronage in the name of the NLS without the authorisation of its legitimate leadership,” the notice stated.
The society maintained that its leadership remains under Chief Mela Audu Nunghe, SAN, as President, while Chief Bolaji Ayorinde, SAN, OFR, serves as Chairman of its Board of Trustees.
It said all official communications and activities of the NLS are conducted through its recognised National Secretariat.
As part of the material accompanying the petition, the society listed Jaja’s letter of appointment, his email accepting the appointment and requesting a stipend, his resignation email, and what it described as an expulsion notice issued by Ambassador Dahiru Aliyu to the Court of Appeal.
Other documents listed by the NLS include a public notice concerning the purported conference at Top Rank Hotel, a call for applications for the “Blue Silk” award, and the enrolled order of the Federal High Court, Abuja Division, in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/482/2023.
The society said copies of the petition were also forwarded to several Nigerian and foreign institutions and officials.
Among those listed were the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, the Director-General of the State Security Service, the Director-General of SMEDAN, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, the Lagos State House of Assembly and a First Bank branch in Abuja.
The petition was also copied to officials and institutions outside Nigeria, including the Minister of Law and Justice of the Kingdom of Lesotho, the Chief Justice of Lesotho, the President of the Law Society of Lesotho, the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the National University of Lesotho, and Justice Malcolm Simmons of the Supreme Court of the Falkland Islands.
The NLS said the police petition was aimed at addressing what it considers an unlawful use of its name and institutional identity, while urging members of the public to verify any programme, award, training or solicitation purportedly organised under the society’s name through its recognised secretariat.
