Former Governor of Edo State and current senator representing Edo North, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, was received by a large crowd at Upper Siluko Road in Benin City when he visited the family of Joyce Imasuen, a 21-year-old blind girl whom he adopted 14 years ago, in 2011.

The girl is now a law graduate of the University of Benin, having earned a Second Class Upper degree.

At the girl’s residence, Oshiomhole’s presence drew residents from the neighbourhood, who trooped out to welcome the former governor.

Oshiomhole said he adopted the girl believing that she was not the architect of her misfortune, and noted that he was pleasantly surprised when she chose to study law rather than other, less demanding courses.

Speaking, he said: “Rather than lamenting what you cannot change, you chose to demonstrate that with determination, you can still get to where you want to go.

“There are many people who are not challenged at all and yet cannot obtain a law degree; they try and fail. Imagine making a 2.1 with all these challenges. The sky is your starting point in life.

“My view about you and people like you has radically changed because of your example. If I were to go through that route again, there are a couple of things I would do differently, seeing that there is nothing other people can do that you haven’t shown can be done, and even better.”

On her decision to study law, Oshiomhole said: “When you told me you were going to read law, I thought it was a very difficult course. I suggested political science, public administration, or mass communication, which I believed were relatively easier. But you chose law, and I am happy that, looking back, you were very sure of yourself and committed fully. You are now a law graduate.”

For her part, Imasuen said Oshiomhole has been like a father to her, supporting her through secondary school at Queen’s College, Lagos, and her university education.

She said: “He made sure I was always comfortable. I gained admission into the University of Benin in 2019 to study law, and when I informed him, he got me a laptop to aid my learning and ensured my years at UNIBEN were stress-free, apart from academic stress.

“On January 31, 2025, I completed my programme, and my result is out. I am proud to say I graduated with a 2.1. I am thankful to God for bringing Senator Comrade Adams Oshiomhole into my life.

“It has been almost 14 years since I have known him, and I am so happy.”

An elated Michael Imasuen, Joyce’s father, said: “What could have been a burden given my income as a teacher, he lifted from me. The child never looked back but worked hard to get the best from the support he provided. With this, I can tell the whole world that I am very grateful to the pillar of truth, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.”

Also present to receive Oshiomhole was the Executive Director of the Network for the Advancement of People with Disabilities (NAPVID), Melody Omosah, Esq., who said: “We owe you immense gratitude, Comrade. What I often tell people is that your relationship with her is completely devoid of politics. Each time I ask her when last she spoke with you, she confirms how frequently you stay in touch. Thank you very much.”

Joyce was adopted by Oshiomhole in 2011, when she was nine years old and he was serving as governor.
