A mother and her child have died after two trucks carrying 20-foot containers overturned at Mile 2, by Freeman Market, inward Apapa, Lagos State.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority disclosed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday by its Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq.

According to LASTMA, the victims were trapped beneath the overturned trucks and their containerised cargoes and sustained fatal injuries.

“The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority over the weekend responded to a devastating road traffic incident at Mile 2, by Freeman Market, inward Apapa, in which a mother and her child lost their lives following the overturning of two heavily laden 20-foot containerised trucks,” Taofiq said.

He added that the victims were trapped under the vehicles and containers and sustained severe injuries that led to their deaths.

LASTMA rescue and recovery personnel were deployed to the scene to evacuate the victims, recover the overturned trucks and manage traffic around the affected area.

The road was temporarily cordoned off while motorists were diverted through an adjoining service lane to prevent gridlock and reduce the risk of secondary accidents.

The agency also deployed a crane and a high-capacity tow vehicle to remove the trucks and their containerised cargoes from the road.

Police officers provided security during the recovery operation, while the remains of the victims were taken to the Police Mortuary in Yaba for necessary procedures.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and called for a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

Bakare-Oki said relevant security and traffic authorities should establish whether mechanical defects, excessive loading, improper cargo distribution, driver negligence or other factors contributed to the incident.

He also urged operators of articulated vehicles to comply strictly with road-safety regulations, conduct regular inspections of their trucks and ensure that containers and other cargoes are properly secured before embarking on journeys.

“The preservation of human life remains paramount,” Bakare-Oki said.

He urged motorists, particularly operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and comply with prescribed safety standards.

According to him, responsible driving, proper maintenance and adequate securing of cargoes remain essential to preventing avoidable deaths on Nigerian roads.

The Mile 2 incident comes days after another fatal truck crash in the South-West.

On Wednesday, a motorboy was killed while three other persons, including a truck driver, sustained injuries after a cement-laden trailer crashed along Mile 6, Ajebo Road, in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency said that crash occurred at Agbedejobi village after the trailer allegedly suffered brake failure while descending a bridge.

The driver reportedly lost control while trying to avoid a vehicle ahead, causing the trailer to enter a ditch before veering onto a railway track and spilling its contents into a nearby bush.
