Residents in the UK have burnt some masts over claims that coronavirus is linked with 5G technology.

The BBC reports that masts in Birmingham and Merseyside were burnt during the week by irate individuals over the claims which have now gone viral online.

Some social media users have said the coronavirus is caused by radiation from the 5G network.

Others have said what is making people sick is such radiation and not the virus.

But the UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport have dismissed the claims, which it  described as inaccurate.

“There is absolutely no credible evidence of a link between 5G and coronavirus,” it added.

The UK mobile network providers also warned against the spread of the rumours and conspiracy theories.

The rumours have also emerged among Nigerians who have urged the government to not install 5G masts over fears of the virus.

Dino Melaye, a former senator from Kogi state, tweeted a video claiming that the radiation from the 5G is what causes the coronavirus.

In another tweet, he wrote: “Say NO to 5G. 5G is evil.”

However, TheCable fact-checked the claim and found it to be misleading.
