The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has called for continuous training and capacity development for judicial officers to enable the courts to respond effectively to the growing sophistication of technology-driven financial crimes and digital evidence.

Kekere-Ekun spoke on Tuesday in Abuja at the eighth annual capacity-building workshop for judges and justices organised by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the National Judicial Institute.

The workshop, themed “Investigation and Prosecution of Economic and Financial Crimes in a Digital Age,” focused on the challenges emerging technologies pose to the investigation, prosecution and adjudication of financial crimes.

The CJN said technological developments had fundamentally changed the manner in which digital evidence is obtained, preserved and presented before the courts, making it increasingly necessary for judges and justices to continually update their knowledge and skills.

According to her, the changing nature of financial crimes also places greater responsibility on judicial officers to understand emerging forms of evidence and apply disciplined case management in handling increasingly complex cases.

She stressed that continuous judicial education had become imperative if the justice system was to keep pace with technological developments and ensure the effective administration of criminal justice.

Kekere-Ekun noted that sustained judicial education and capacity-building initiatives were already producing positive results, particularly in improving case management and the overall dispensation of justice.

She also highlighted the importance of institutional collaboration in addressing challenges confronting the criminal justice system, describing the partnership between the EFCC and the NJI as an important platform for equipping judicial officers with the knowledge required to deal with emerging financial crimes.

The Chief Justice maintained that as technology continues to transform the character of economic and financial crimes, judicial officers must possess the necessary technical understanding to properly evaluate digital evidence and effectively manage cases involving new and complex forms of criminal activity.

She said continued training, disciplined case management and stronger institutional cooperation would remain critical to strengthening the judiciary’s capacity to deliver justice in an increasingly digital environment.
