The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit (Taskforce) has arrested six suspects allegedly involved in a fraudulent street lottery scheme that targeted unsuspecting residents in the Iyana-Ipaja area of the state.
The suspects — Amaike Nelson, Kenneth Opuana, Oguntade Olusegun, Ogologo Obi, Goodluck Abel, and Oluwafunmilayo Adebimpe were apprehended following intelligence reports on their activities.
According to the Taskforce, the syndicate lured a 19-year-old student, Rukayat Kamilu, into a rigged street game, where she was manipulated into surrendering her mobile phone and other personal belongings.
One of the suspects, Oguntade Olusegun, allegedly posed as a confused passer-by seeking help to pick a “winning number.” After Kamilu got involved, the group reportedly seized her phone and demanded a payment of ₦100,000 for its return.
Acting on a tip-off, operatives led by Taskforce Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, stormed the location and apprehended the suspects. Several empty Android phone boxes, allegedly used as props in the scam, were recovered during the operation.
CSP Akerele condemned the act and assured residents of the agency’s ongoing efforts to eliminate such criminal schemes across the state.
“Our responsibility is to safeguard the lives and property of Lagosians. We will leave no room for such fraudulent activities to thrive,” he said.
The suspects were arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court on charges including gambling, extortion, theft, and conspiracy. They all pleaded guilty and were ordered to remain in custody pending the next hearing scheduled for August 7, 2025.
