Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has lauded the recent appointments of former and current members of the House as ministers, highlighting the substantial contributions that parliamentarians can make to the nation. The remarks were made following the appointment and inauguration of Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and Tanko Sununo as ministers on Monday by President Bola Tinubu.

Tunji-Ojo, a two-term member who represented Akoko North-East/Akoko North-West federal constituency of Ondo state, has been appointed as the Minister of Interior. Meanwhile, Sununo, who represented Yauri/Shanga/Ngaski federal constituency of Kebbi state, will serve as the Minister of State for Education.

Speaker Abbas expressed confidence in the abilities of the two former lawmakers to leverage their wealth of experience in their new national roles. Tunji-Ojo’s previous leadership of the House Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) during the 9th House session demonstrates his capabilities. Notably, Tunji-Ojo’s appointment occurred prior to the inauguration of the Standing Committees of the 10th House.

Sununo, who previously chaired the House committee on Healthcare Services during the 9th House session and continued his role in the 10th House, was also lauded by the speaker. The speaker praised Sununo’s contributions to the health sector, particularly his role in addressing the ongoing intervention by the House in the conflict between the Federal Government and the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors.

Recognizing that the House will miss their valued contributions to legislative business, Abbas emphasized that the ministerial appointments of Tunji-Ojo, Sununo, and other former and current members of the National Assembly underline the federal parliament’s vast potential to serve the country.

Speaker Abbas extended congratulations to former House members who now hold ministerial positions, including Hon. Abubakar Momoh, Minister for Niger Delta Affairs; Hon. Zaphaniah Jisalo, Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs; Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Minister of State for Labour and Employment; and Hon. John Enoh, Minister of Sports Development and former senator.

Reflecting on the swearing-in of the ministers, Abbas expressed optimism for a strengthened collaboration between the Legislative and Executive branches, working together to enhance democracy and drive progress and development in Nigeria.
