The Kebbi State Police Command says a 45-year-old man, Bello Abubakar, will be charged to court over the alleged attempted murder of a commercial motorcycle rider and theft of his motorcycle upon the conclusion of investigations.

The suspect, a resident of Ganwo Village in Yauri Local Government Area, has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and prosecution.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday.

According to the police, the incident occurred at about 4:00 p.m. on August 23, 2026, when 22-year-old commercial motorcycle rider Bello Umar, of Wasagu Village in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area, was found with a serious head injury at Tungar Dariya Bush, near Makera Village in Shanga Local Government Area.

The injured rider was evacuated to Koko General Hospital, where he received medical treatment and was subsequently discharged.

Preliminary investigation reportedly revealed that Abubakar hired the victim and his motorcycle in Koko Town for a trip to Tungar Dariya Bush.

The police alleged that upon arriving at the bush, the suspect attacked the rider with a hoe before covering his body with leaves in the belief that he had died.

Abubakar allegedly fled from the scene with the victim’s motorcycle and took it to Yauri Town.

The police said further investigation led to the recovery of the allegedly stolen motorcycle and the arrest of the suspect.

According to the command, Abubakar is cooperating with investigators as the State Criminal Investigation Department continues its investigation ahead of his proposed arraignment.

The Commissioner of Police in Kebbi State, CP Umar M. Hadejia, described the alleged attack as “despicable” and a direct assault on human life and livelihood.

Hadejia warned that the command would pursue and prosecute anyone who targeted commercial motorcycle riders or other law-abiding residents of the state.

The allegations against Abubakar have not been proved in court, and he is presumed innocent until found guilty.
