Former presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Dumebi Kachikwu, has strongly criticised the ongoing convention dispute within the party, accusing a rival faction of disregarding a court order and deepening internal divisions.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday in Abuja, Kachikwu said a Federal High Court had, on April 14, ordered parties in a suit involving ADC state chairmen and a faction linked to David Mark to maintain the status quo pending the determination of the case. According to him, the directive effectively halted any congresses or national conventions.

He, however, alleged that despite the court’s order, the rival group proceeded to hold a convention under the party’s platform, describing the move as unlawful and a threat to democratic order.

Kachikwu said the action raised concerns about respect for the rule of law, arguing that political actors who disregard court directives could not be acting in the interest of either the party or the country.

He further criticised the convention, describing it as lacking in constructive engagement, and accused participants of focusing on attacks against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling party rather than presenting alternative policy ideas.

According to him, opposition politics should centre on clear policy alternatives and solutions, not rhetoric or political confrontation.

The former ADC candidate also faulted key opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, accusing them of failing to address pressing national issues, particularly security and economic challenges within their regions of influence.

He warned that Nigeria’s fragile state, shaped by years of insecurity, economic difficulties and governance concerns, could deteriorate further if political actors continue to prioritise power struggles over national stability.

Kachikwu maintained that the legitimate leadership of the ADC would proceed with its activities within the framework of the law and would resist attempts to take over the party for personal political interests.

In a direct message to President Tinubu, he urged the administration to focus more on national unity, warning that persistent divisions could undermine governance. He added that while tough policy decisions may be necessary, building public trust and consensus remains critical.

He urged Nigerians to remain cautious of political actors whose ambitions, he said, may not align with the broader national interest.
