The Delta State Police Command has opened a full-scale investigation into the gruesome murder of retired Justice Ifeoma Okogwu, whose body was discovered at her residence in Asaba on November 24, 2025.

The Command stated that the Divisional Police Officer of A Division, Asaba, received a distress call from the victim’s brother after he found her lifeless body in the sitting room with her hands, legs, and mouth bound. Officers immediately visited the scene, evacuated the body, and deposited it at the mortuary for autopsy.

According to the family, the late judge’s remains were discovered early Monday morning after what appeared to be a violent overnight attack. Her home was reportedly ransacked, raising suspicions of a targeted intrusion.

Her brother, Ogbueshi Godfrey Okogwu, who described the killing as shocking and devastating, said the disappearance of the night security guard deployed to the premises had deepened the family’s concerns.

“A major red flag in the investigation is the disappearance of the night guard stationed at the judge’s home. The morning guard claimed he met the gate wide open when he arrived. He said he simply sat there. Sat there doing what? I do not know. I do not understand this situation at all,” he stated.

He added that the family had already submitted the name and details of the private security company responsible for posting the guards to the police.

The police confirmed that the morning guard has been detained, while the owner of the private security company has been invited for questioning.

Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, said security guards connected with the incident are already in custody, while one suspect remains at large.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested one identified suspect, Lucky Matthew. The prime suspect, Godwin Vanem, is currently on the run. Acting on the directive of Commissioner of Police Olufemi Abaniwonda, the State CID Homicide Section has taken over the case for a discreet and thorough investigation.

Preliminary findings, according to the Command, strongly link the fleeing suspect to the crime.

The Commissioner of Police has condoled with the family of the late Justice Okogwu and assured them that every effort is being made to uncover the circumstances surrounding her death and ensure that justice is fully served.
