At the 2nd Regional Conference on the Administration of Criminal Justice, themed “Leveraging Technology in the Criminal Justice System”, key players in the justice sector emphasized the critical role of technology in facilitating effective pre-trial measures and case management in criminal proceedings.

Professor Ayodele Atsenuwa, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Development Services at the University of Lagos, along with other keynote speakers, stressed the urgency of rebranding Nigeria’s criminal justice system by harnessing the latest technological advancements. Participants highlighted the challenges hindering speedy justice dispensation, including delays in case assignment and tracking, inadequate funding, logistical issues, and inconsistencies in coordination, as revealed by a survey conducted among agencies in the criminal justice sector and lawyers.

Stakeholders proposed workable solutions, such as the early deployment of technology and the implementation of a functional case management system accessible to all relevant parties. Faith Msimuko Lungu from the Ministry of Justice in Malawi presented findings on the use of technology in criminal justice systems across Africa, identifying challenges such as lack of capacity building, inaccurate data, infrastructural issues, and the coexistence of manual systems.

In their appraisal of sentencing, rehabilitation, and recidivism, stakeholders called upon the government to ensure that officials in the criminal justice system remain up-to-date with modern technology. They also advocated for the establishment of guidelines for inter-agency collaboration and the development of a comprehensive legislative framework to prevent recurring cases.

The conference concluded with a consensus that the implementation of the recommendations put forth during the event would significantly improve the criminal justice system and enhance justice delivery in Nigeria and across Africa. By leveraging technology and fostering effective collaboration among stakeholders, the criminal justice sector can take significant strides towards ensuring fair, efficient, and timely administration of justice.
