The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested an Anambra-based social critic, Justice Ozobi, over allegations that the Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State collected ₦4.2 million in bribes from families of six arrested persons.

The arrest was confirmed on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer in Ebonyi State, Superintendent of Police Joshua Ukandu, who said Ozobi was apprehended in Anambra State and subsequently taken to Ebonyi for investigation.
Ozobi had, in a Facebook post dated August 31, alleged that the Commissioner of Police collected ₦700,000 each from six families, amounting to ₦4.2 million, to secure the release of their sons.
According to Ozobi, the six suspects had been arrested in connection with a land dispute involving some villagers and Sunday Oketa, the traditional ruler of Oroko Onuoha Community in Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The social critic further alleged that officers attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department released the suspects after the alleged payments were made, but later rearrested and arraigned them before a court.
The police had earlier denied the bribery allegations.
In announcing Ozobi’s arrest, Ukandu also said the social critic used the photograph of a former Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State in connection with the allegation, an action the command said subjected the retired senior officer to public ridicule and embarrassment.
Ozobi subsequently acknowledged in a separate social media post that the use of the former commissioner’s photograph was inappropriate and said he had removed it.
He, however, maintained that he stood by his allegation concerning the alleged payment of ₦4.2 million.
The Ebonyi State Police Command said that while it respected citizens’ constitutional right to freedom of expression, it would not tolerate what it described as the deliberate dissemination of false, malicious or defamatory information capable of damaging the image of the command and the Nigeria Police Force.
“The Command remains committed to accountability and will continue to hold its officers to the highest standards of professionalism, discipline and ethical conduct,” Ukandu said.
The police spokesperson also advised members of the public to verify information before publication or dissemination and to direct genuine complaints against police personnel through appropriate channels for investigation.
