Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday paid a condolence visit to Aisha Buhari, widow of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, and other members of the Buhari family in London following the former president’s death.

According to a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communications, Shettima also visited Buhari’s nephew, Mamman Daura, who is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in the UK.

The visits came as the Vice President awaits the conclusion of procedures for the repatriation of Buhari’s remains to Nigeria for burial.

“The condolence visits were conducted while the Vice President awaits the conclusion of procedures and documentation for the repatriation of former President Buhari’s body to Nigeria,” Nkwocha said in the statement titled ‘VP Shettima Pays Condolence Visit To Buhari’s Family In London’.

Shettima is in London on the directive of President Bola Tinubu, who announced Buhari’s death on Sunday at about 4:30 p.m. in a London hospital.

He was accompanied by Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar; and Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hadejia.

As part of his engagements in the UK, Vice President Shettima also visited former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), on behalf of President Tinubu. Abdulsalami is currently recuperating in London.

President Tinubu has ordered that flags be flown at half-staff in honour of the former president, whose burial is scheduled to take place in Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday in accordance with Islamic rites.

Buhari served as Nigeria’s democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023 and had previously led the country as military Head of State between 1984 and 1985.
