The management of Paul University, Awka, Anambra State, has suspended one of its lecturers, Cornelius Eze, over allegations of serious sexual misconduct.

The private university, which is owned by the Anglican Church in Anambra State, announced the suspension in a statement issued on Friday by its spokesperson, Godsplan Onukwufor.

According to the university, the allegation against Eze, a Practical Biology Technologist in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, was brought to the attention of the institution on July 14.

Onukwufor said the management immediately intervened following rising tension among students over the incident and invited relevant security agencies to take over the matter in order to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

“As a preliminary administrative measure and without prejudice to the outcome of ongoing investigations, the university management has placed the staff on indefinite suspension pending the conclusion of both the internal disciplinary process and any investigations being conducted by the appropriate law enforcement authorities,” the statement said.

Eze is also said to be an Anglican priest in Anambra State.

The university stressed that, as a faith-based institution, it is founded on integrity, discipline, moral uprightness and respect for human dignity, adding that it does not condone sexual misconduct, sexual harassment or any form of abuse by staff or students.

Onukwufor said any staff member or student found culpable of violating the university’s regulations or the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria would be dealt with in accordance with due process.

The university also said it was mindful of the emotional and psychological impact of the incident on affected students and staff members, adding that arrangements were being made to provide counselling and therapeutic support for the student or students concerned and other affected members of the university community.

The management assured parents, students, staff and the general public of its commitment to maintaining a safe, secure and morally sound learning environment where every member of the community is treated with dignity and respect.

“The university remains committed to ensuring that justice is served fairly, transparently, and in accordance with the law,” the statement added.

The development followed a viral video circulated earlier in the week, which suggested that a university lecturer was caught allegedly engaging in sexual misconduct with an unidentified student in his office.

In the clip, the lecturer was said to have escaped through a window after some angry students reportedly stormed his office. The video also showed a man wearing only shorts appearing to hide in a bush near the office.

Initial speculations had linked the incident to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, popularly known as UNIZIK. However, the institution’s spokesperson, Aloysius Attah, denied that the lecturer was a staff member of UNIZIK.

Hours later, Paul University, Awka, posted Eze’s photograph and confirmed that he is a member of its staff.
