Five suspects have been arraigned before the Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun State over an alleged attack on police officers that reportedly left personnel seriously injured and enabled a handcuffed suspect to escape.

The Ogun State Police Command said operatives attached to the Ota Area Command brought the defendants before the court on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, on charges arising from the incident around The Bells area of Iyana-Iyesi, Ota.

The defendants were identified as Morenikeji Badmus, 36; Adedoja Segun, 40; Jeremiah Odise Ugbede Onride, 49; Mike Stephen, 28; and David Odeh, 32.

In a statement, the command’s spokesman, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the incident occurred on October 2 when a patrol team intercepted and arrested a suspect allegedly carrying a large quantity of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

According to Babaseyi, the officers were conveying the handcuffed suspect to the station when a group of armed persons allegedly ambushed them with cutlasses, stones and bottles.

He said the confrontation caused severe bodily injuries to police personnel, damaged their operational vehicle and enabled the suspect to escape.

Detectives subsequently conducted intelligence operations that led to the arrests of the five defendants over their alleged involvement in the attack.

“The suspects have been arraigned today on counts bordering on conspiracy, serious assault on police officers, obstruction of lawful duty, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, while efforts are ongoing to track down other fleeing accomplices,” Babaseyi said.

The statement did not disclose the defendants’ pleas, any ruling on bail or remand, or the next hearing date. It also did not state whether the handcuffed suspect had been rearrested.

Babaseyi reiterated the commitment of the Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, to protecting officers carrying out their lawful duties.

He urged members of the public to avoid physical confrontation with law enforcement personnel and to channel grievances through official complaint mechanisms.
