Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Nigerian Senate has disclosed plans to amend the Electoral Act to allow for diaspora voting and make electronic transmission of results mandatory.

In a communique issued after a recent retreat, the Senate stated it will move to enable Nigerians abroad, especially those on essential service like military personnel, to participate in presidential polls from 2027 onwards. The amendment will also mandate the uploading of polling unit results and images of result sheets at all levels of collation during the e-transmission process.

The proposed changes follow calls from Nigerians at home and abroad for diaspora voting rights and compulsory electronic transfer of results from INEC’s BVAS machines. They aim to improve the credibility and inclusiveness of future elections.

Other likely amendments outlined in the Senate retreat include stipulating sanctions for political parties who fail to submit their membership registers before primaries, as required by the Act. The Senators noted several parties violated this in the 2023 elections without consequence.

Additionally, the legislative chamber plans to enact a comprehensive national security strategy that will guide security objectives, identify threats, and inform policy priorities. This framework legislation will shape the Senate’s future action on security matters.

The Electoral Act amendments will be made well in advance of the next national polls to enable INEC make necessary preparations for their implementation. With the 2023 elections now over, the Senate has turned focus to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process for the future.
