The premises of the National Assembly resembled a war zone this morning as operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) took control amid speculations of an impeachment move against Senate President Goodswill Akpabio.

According to orderpaper report, some aggrieved northern senators, allegedly dissatisfied with President Bola Tinubu, are reportedly reviving an earlier attempt to remove Akpabio from office. The heightened security presence is believed to be a response to this potential threat.

DSS personnel, dressed in dark-colored suits and wearing intimidating dark shades, have been stationed at all entrances within the National Assembly premises, from the main entrance to the second gate. This move aims to ensure the safety of lives and property in the event of any security breach or threats that might disrupt the proceedings of lawmakers and staff, particularly if the internal security is overwhelmed.

Globally, parliaments have dedicated internal security personnel responsible for maintaining order and safety within and around the premises of parliament. The presence of other security agencies attached to the parliament is not uncommon, especially during times of heightened tension or potential threats.

As of now, the situation remains tense, with lawmakers and staff arriving at the National Assembly amid the heavy security presence. It remains to be seen how the alleged impeachment threat against Senate President Akpabio will unfold and whether the DSS’s intervention will effectively maintain order and prevent any disruption to parliamentary proceedings.
