The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. The confirmation was announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio after lawmakers cleared the nominee through a voice vote at the Committee of the Whole.

Oyedele is expected to replace Doris Uzoka-Anite, who has been moved to serve as Minister of Budget and National Planning (State). The 50-year-old economist, accountant, and public policy expert was formerly the chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, where he oversaw a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s tax laws.
The Senate spent over two hours questioning Oyedele on economic and fiscal matters before confirming him. During the session, Oyedele described his nomination as a call to serve Nigeria, highlighting his over two decades of experience in government, multilateral institutions, global corporations, and public policy.
“With over two decades of experience working with national governments, multilateral institutions, and global corporations, my journey across the private sector, academia, and public policy has focused on fiscal governance and economic transformation,” Oyedele told senators. “This moment is not about personal accomplishments; it is a call to serve at a critical time when Nigeria faces significant fiscal challenges and remarkable opportunities.”
President Tinubu had formally forwarded Oyedele’s name to the Senate following his nomination, in line with Section 147(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). The letter, read during plenary, sought expeditious consideration of the nominee by lawmakers.
Before his ministerial appointment, Oyedele led the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, which developed a new tax regime over two years. The laws, which took effect on January 1, 2026, aim to transform tax administration, boost revenue generation, enhance the business environment, and attract domestic and foreign investment.
Oyedele holds a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Accountancy and Finance from Yaba College of Technology, a BSc in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University, and has completed executive programs at the London School of Economics, Yale University, the Gordon Institute of Business Science, and Harvard Kennedy School.
The Senate screening was moved by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and attended by government officials, including the Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Senate matters, Basheer Lado. Oyedele entered the chamber at about 2:21 pm and concluded his session at 4:30 pm.
With his confirmation, Taiwo Oyedele assumes office at a critical time for Nigeria’s fiscal and economic landscape, bringing a wealth of experience in public policy, accounting, and economic reform.
