Chairman, Senate Committee on Diaspora, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Civil Societies, Dr. Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, has called on the Nigerian Senate to review the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The lawmaker made this observation while speaking on the legislative agenda at the Red-Chambers.

He asked why if all cases must terminate at the Supreme Court level in Nigeria. He noted that the Supreme Court with limited number of justices accepts appeals from thirty-seven judiciaries aside from the Federal High Court and the National Industrial Court; emphasizing that this is not healthy for the system. He, therefore, drew the attention of the lawmakers to the issue which to him needs to be looked into.

Speaking further, he suggested that there must be courses and retreats for senators on strategic areas of the competence of each of the committee, adding that, for their legislative aides to assists them maximally; there must be need for training for them

“The issue of capacity enhancement was examined, but with respect, it was examined in a very general perspective. I would rather say that we need to be specific in program and in this regard; I suggest that there must be courses and retreats for senators on strategic areas of the competence of each of the committees. We are elected by our people, but all of us are not trained in all fields. For our legislative aides to assist us maximally, there must be need for training them.”

He also added that there is need to assist the National Institute for Legislative Study, but the Senate needs to review how effective it has been to the work of legislatures. He stressed that if it has not been so, then how do they make them to live at value.

He further stressed that there must be timelines for the consideration of bills in the legislative agenda, whilst raising the issue of compilation of our laws without review. He also raised the issue of penalties in some of our laws, whilst suggesting that there is need for a holistic review of our laws in the light of current reality.

He thus stressed the need to set up an Adhoc committee working in partnership with the relevant committees and the executive, to set up a Law revision committee to have a law that is in line with current reality. He also raised the issue of state police. He asked if it is out of place for state authorities to have such instrumentalities in place considering the population of the Nation.
