The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arraigned two men before the Federal High Court in Enugu over their alleged involvement in a Nigerian-Mexican drug syndicate accused of operating a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in Enugu State.

The defendants, Chukwu Obumneme Christopher, 45, also known as Brown, and Chukwu Georginus Monday, 60, also known as George, were arraigned before Justice Mabel Taiye Segun-Bello on a five-count charge.
The charges border on alleged conspiracy, organisation, management and financing of a drug-trafficking organisation, as well as unlawful possession of precursor chemicals reportedly intended for the production of methamphetamine.
NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed the arraignment in a statement issued on Thursday, September 24, 2026.
According to the agency, the defendants allegedly operated the laboratory in partnership with Rodriguez Villanueva, whom the NDLEA described as a member of a Mexican drug cartel based in Mexico City.
Three other persons named in the charge—Villanueva, Uchenna, also known as Uche, and Celestine Ikemefuna Iwuchukwu—are said to be at large.
Following the defendants’ pleas, the NDLEA applied for an accelerated hearing. Justice Segun-Bello consequently fixed October 21, 2026, for the commencement of trial.
The anti-narcotics agency said the case resulted from several months of intelligence gathering and surveillance by its Special Operations Unit.
According to the NDLEA, surveillance conducted between December 1 and 4, 2025, tracked Christopher’s movements across Lagos, Enugu and Anambra states.
The operation reportedly led investigators to a compound in Eziama community, Obeagu, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, where the alleged clandestine laboratory was discovered.
The agency claimed that the facility was fitted with improvised reactors and distillation equipment and was capable of producing methamphetamine in commercial quantities.
It added that the facility was similar to other suspected laboratories recently dismantled in Ogun, Oyo and Ebonyi states.
The NDLEA said its operatives recovered large quantities of precursor chemicals during a search of the premises. The substances reportedly included 690 litres of methylamine, 1,000 litres of isopropyl alcohol, 300 litres of hydrochloric acid and 290 litres each of toluene and acetone.
Other allegedly recovered substances included 400 litres of liquid sodium hydroxide, 125 kilogrammes of N-phenylacetamide, 414 kilogrammes of lead acetate and 769.6 kilogrammes of tartaric acid.
The agency said the volume and combination of the substances were consistent with what it described as a high-potency, P2P-based methamphetamine manufacturing operation.
A related search conducted at Monday’s family residence allegedly yielded eight large fuel tanks, four commercial gas burners, four dehydrators and 11 kilogrammes of ephedrine.
NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brigadier-General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), said the agency would continue pursuing the suspects who remain at large and ensure that everyone allegedly connected to the operation is brought before the court.
Marwa commended the officers involved in the investigation and described the operation as evidence that transnational drug networks would not be permitted to establish production bases in Nigeria.
He said the agency would continue deploying intelligence-led operations and international partnerships to identify and close channels allegedly exploited by local and foreign drug traffickers.
The allegations against the defendants have not been proved, and they remain presumed innocent unless convicted by a court of competent jurisdiction.
