Minister of State For Education, Emeka Nwajiuba has said private schools in Nigeria, which were licensed to run international curriculum are free to commence their third term examinations using online mode.

His explanation came amidst controversies regarding schools resumption in the wake of the raging Coronavirus infection and gradual relaxation of lockdown across the country.

The Minister while trying to set the records straight, said government was not averse to online learning, but that it was understandable that private schools where children of diplomats are enrolled could actually start third term online so as not to disrupt their academic programme.

He gave the directive while fielding questions from reporters at the daily briefing session of the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19, chaired by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha.

“Schools that operate or run a foreign program in Nigerian and whether they can test for their own third term exams, truly they should and they can.

“We know that there are some private schools licensed to run foreign curriculum essentially for the children of expatriates and diplomats.

“We understand that such school have approved curricula that are targeted at satisfying the ability of such children to be able to re-join the school system of their home countries at the time of need or when they return back.

“If such schools are able to host online classes for the curriculum they operate and they choose to use the period to cover their syllabus, it is permitted “the Minister noted.

While expressing concerns raised by stakeholders over the continued shut down of educational institutions, he said,” we have not said people should stop learning”.
