Commercial banks in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Wednesday, shut operations around 11 am following information that robbers were in the town.

This came barely two weeks after some robbers attacked two commercial banks at Ile Oluji in Ile Oluji/Oke Igbo Local Government Area of the state, killing four people including policemen.

As a result of the information on the purported presence of hoodlums in town, many shop owners in the capital city also hurriedly closed their shops and went back home while motorists plying the routes around the bank area, diverted their movements to another route.

The development caused a light pandemonium in the town as many people in some areas such as Oja Oba, Alagbaka, Oke Aro, Oyemekun and Oba Adesida Road, scampered for safety.

A bank official, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, told The PUNCH that the information had been out since last week that there might be a possible attack on the banks in Akure, by some bandits.

The bank official said, “We have been hearing the information that robbers are in the town and may attack any of the banks. Today (Wednesday), another security information came that robbers may attack the banks, so we have to be proactive and quickly shut our gates.”

Shortly after, it was observed that a team of security operatives comprising policemen and soldiers patrolled the popular areas to maintain law and order while some policemen were seen conducting stop-and-search on passersby on Oyemekun Road.

Many bank customers, who were shut out of the banking halls, resorted to Automated Teller Machines and the Point of Sales Service for their transactions.

Reacting to the development, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Femi Joseph, said there was no robbery case anywhere in the state.

He said, “We make bold to say that the story on bank robbery is not only false and mischievous but also wicked and lacks substance.

“We urge the good people of the state to disregard this rumour. Our men are everywhere across the state to deal with any manner of crime or criminality.”
